This week many of our investigators told us (through actions and/or words) that they do not want to meet with us anymore. As a missionary this is somewhat difficult because well, we're missionaries. If we don't have people to meet with we have nothing to do. We of course found work to do, and our number for lessons taught to less active members proves it. We met some new people, and tried to find some new investigators while we were at it.
The investigators that we are still meeting with are amazing though. I love meeting with them! We taught Jargal Emee the Plan of Salvation this week. We broke it into multiple lessons, and luckily I'm very good at teaching simply! At the end of our last meeting she thanked us for teaching so that she could understand. We are also meeting with Enkhtoya. Earlier this week we taught her about the Book of Mormon and asked her to read it, and pray about it. We met with her again yesterday after church and I asked if she had read and prayed. She had. When I asked her what she had felt she said, "I had beautiful feelings and that's why I came to church today." One of her good friends is a church member, and through her friend's example Enkhtoya was introduced to the church. She is progressing quickly, and has a genuine desire to learn.
This week we went to Sanzai, the countryside of Sukhbaatar. It takes 30-45 minutes by taxi to get there. We had called ahead and planned to meet with a less active emee in the area. We found her house, and quickly realized that she had a very big dog. I wasn't scared or worried at this point because the dog was inside the gate and we were outside the gate. (Now for this story to be funny and accurate you also have to understand that Sister Oyuntoya is very afraid of dogs. Even if we're 20 feet from a dog that is not barking or moving toward us she tells it to leave). Anyway, we called the emee and asked her to come out to the door to get us but she couldn't come (we found out later why--she's blind) and everyone else in the house was asleep. She told us to go to the backdoor. We traipsed through the snow to the backdoor, and the dog was there again. There goes that option... We walked back to the main road, and the dog was waiting for us there. He just stood their watching us for a few minutes and then pranced on down the road to visit his other waiting dog friends. I grabbed Sister Oyuntoya's hand and we ran back to the front door where there was another dog waiting for us. Come on, give us a break--two dogs. Well that dog quietly barks, and we start to move away from the door when the other huge dog comes running down the road towards us. Sister Oyuntoya was yelling at me in Mongolian, I was yelling at her in English and these two wolf like dogs were barely two feet away from us. It reminded me of the scene from 17 miracles with the little baby and the wolf...I was pretty sure I was going to get bit right then and there. Well, Heavenly Father answers prayers and miraculously He answered mine very quickly. A man came out from the gate, calmed the dogs down, took them inside, chained them up, and helped us get inside the house. Sister Oyuntoya said she will never go back there again. I also got a big lecture on how Mongolian dogs are different than American dogs... they're hungry genee. I laughed at that one!
Love from the Land of the Hungry Dogs,
Sister Magleby
